Job Title:  Postsecondary Success Counselor

Location:  Longwood Preparatory Academy High School, 965 Longwood Ave, Bronx, NY 10459 

Reports To:  Community School Director

Position Overview:

The Postsecondary Success Counselor is a critical member of the school support team, helping students envision and achieve successful post-secondary outcomes. This position is responsible for developing and implementing activities and interventions that support student success in high school and prepare them for life after graduation, with a specific emphasis on college access, career exploration, and youth development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and facilitate weekly student groups, including college and career readiness sessions.
  • Monitor student attendance, academic progress, and social-emotional development.
  • Deliver college readiness programming, including guidance on applications, financial aid, and admissions processes.
  • Organize and lead college trips (local, upstate, and out-of-state) and post-secondary exposure opportunities.
  • Support students with FAFSA, TAP, SEEK, EOP, HEOP, and College Discovery application processes.
  • Engage families through workshops on financial aid, college selection, and post-secondary planning.
  • Conduct outreach and follow-up with students, families, and graduates to track post-secondary outcomes.
  • Provide one-on-one and group counseling to address academic, personal, and behavioral challenges.
  • Perform attendance outreach, including home visits and check-ins at student job sites.
  • Coordinate referrals for wraparound services such as mental health, housing, employment, and health care.
  • Assist students in developing individualized post-graduation plans, including employment or vocational pathways.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation on student engagement, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, instructional staff, and other support personnel to create a cohesive support system.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, planning retreats, and professional development.
  • Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation support, and conflict mediation when necessary.
  • Uphold student safety and mandated reporting policies; cooperate with authorities in all matters related to child welfare.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in education, social work, youth development, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with adolescents, especially in group and individual settings.
  • Deep understanding of college access and post-secondary systems, particularly CUNY and NYC programs.
  • Commitment to a strengths-based, youth development approach.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and counseling skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a school-based, interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to engage with diverse student populations.
  • Flexible, reliable, and passionate about equity and youth empowerment.

Compensation : $65,000-$70,000
