Job Description

The Music Therapist is a licensed healthcare professional who utilizes music as a structured, evidence-based intervention to support the physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and social well-being of patients. Grounded in clinical practice, the Music Therapist provides individualized services tailored to each patient’s age, diagnosis, and psychosocial context. Interventions are designed to help patients and families navigate the stress, trauma, and emotional challenges often associated with hospitalization.

Working as an integral member of the interdisciplinary care team, the Music Therapist collaborates in developing, implementing, and evaluating holistic, patient-centered treatment plans that reflect Beacon Health System’s mission to deliver outstanding care, inspire health, and connect with heart.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

  • Assess, plan, coordinate, and implement individual and group music therapy sessions based on patient needs, preferences, and abilities.
  • Set therapeutic goals and objectives using music interventions to support emotional expression, mood regulation, coping strategies, stress reduction, self-esteem, leisure engagement, relaxation, and guided imagery.
  • Address the mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients through a holistic approach to care.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff about the role and benefits of music therapy.
  • Refer patients to additional wellness or clinical services as appropriate.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely case records, including assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes, in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, departmental procedures, quality assurance standards, and applicable safety and infection control protocols.

Collaboration and Program Support

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to coordinate care and share patient progress.
  • Contribute to in-service training and educational programming to promote understanding of integrative therapies within Beacon Health System.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with team members, physicians, and other wellness practitioners.

Professional Development and Contribution

  • Attend department meetings, in-services, and continuing education opportunities as approved.
  • Maintain professional affiliations and stay current with developments in the field through literature, research, and professional conferences.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.

Organizational Responsibilities

The Music Therapist is expected to:

  • Participate actively in department meetings and remain accountable for shared information.
  • Complete all mandatory education, competencies, and health requirements on schedule.
  • Maintain licensure/certification in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Maintain current BCLS (CPR) certification as required for direct patient care providers.
  • Practice universal precautions and safe ergonomic techniques at all times.
  • Comply with all regulatory standards, internal policies, and safety guidelines.
  • Be flexible and available for additional hours or shifts based on departmental needs.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Board certification as a Music Therapist (MT-BC) required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge and application of music therapy techniques in clinical care.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess patient needs, develop treatment plans, and evaluate progress.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct, including respect for confidentiality.

  • Physical stamina and mobility required to fulfill essential functions in a fast-paced clinical environment.
